16 February 2017
Arlington, VA, 16 February 2017 – VADM David Architzel, USN (Ret), President of Fairlead Boat Works, was a defense industry panelist at the Marine Machinery Association’s (MMA) 33rd Annual Spring Meeting, held 15-16 February in Arlington, VA in conjunction with the American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE) Technology, Systems & Ships (TSS) 2017 event.
The panel’s theme, “The Shipbuilding Team: How to Improve and Expand the Fleet“ was particularly timely so close to the Navy’s December 2016 release of a New Force Structure Assessment calling for a 355 ship fleet plan. VADM Architzel, representing industry, advocated the increased use and leverage of small business to significantly strengthen industry’s support to the Navy’s ship repair and construction plans. Architzel also talked to the burden and costs imposed on small businesses by the difficulties of the Navy’s acquisition process. Architzel stated “there are capabilities in the small business community supporting major primes and the Navy that can add significantly to the increased capacity necessary to meet the aggressive shipbuilding goals. Additionally, small businesses bring new technology, innovation, and responsiveness to help meet those goals.”
