Job Summary
The EHS Technician I will perform entry-level technical duties in all EHS program areas. Assignments at this level are routine in nature and follow established guidelines, procedures, and protocols IAW generally accepted EHS standards, federal, state, or local laws or regulations.

The EHS Technician I position is multifaceted and requires basic knowledge and understanding of complex compliance based EHS laws, regulations and standards, the ability to work and act both independently and under the direction of a EHS Specialist. The EHS Technician I is expected to operate independently in conducting assigned duties with technical difficulty in one or more areas of an organization EHS programs. The position will also interface and be a point of contact with the employees when performing field services such as air sampling, industrial hygiene surveys, and job hazard analysis.

The EHS Technician I must perform the job within acceptable safety, environmental, quality, productivity and performance standards as outlined in handbooks, policies, forms, and applicable work instructions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • All responsibilities are assigned by the EHS Director or their designee.
  • Shall report to the EHS Technician III.
  • Assist with baseline and periodic (every one to two years) industrial hygiene surveys of all Fairlead facilities. Draft findings in a final report as directed.
  • Assist with Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) to determine PPE requirements (For office workers, assist with JHAs for ergonomic requirements.)
  • Assist with noise and eye conservation surveys.
  • Assist with ventilation surveys.
  • Assist with submitting rental request for air sampling equipment, ensure the proper calibration of IH equipment (internal and from manufacturer), pre- and post- calibration of equipment, properly completing air sampling form and compliance with recordkeeping requirements.
  • Assist with environmental and industrial hygiene sampling and monitoring (e.g., air, water & soil) including but not limited to Asbestos, Lead, Microbiological (fungi & bacteria), IAQ, Metals, VOC’s, PCBs, and other materials as directed.
  • Comply with Chain of Custody requirements, prepare, process, and track analytical samples collected from projects.
  • Assist with routine inspections to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and company EHS procedures including fire extinguisher inspections, emergency eyewash/safety shower inspections and tests and inspections of hazardous materials accumulation areas.
  • Assist with maintaining on-line SDS and keep up to date along with reviewing SDS sheets of proposed materials.
  • Address and follow up on daily safety issues and concerns.
  • Participate in continuous process improvement(quality) teams.
  • Additional duties may be assigned as needed.
  • Must be able to wear a respirator and other appropriate PPE.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Accomplishes all tasks as appropriately as assigned or requested by the EHS leadership team.

Qualifications:

  • Education/Experience: At least one (1) year experience as an industrial hygiene technician and two (2) year degree in occupational safety, industrial hygiene, environmental discipline or equivalent or a one year of experience or a Bachelor of Science in occupational safety, industrial hygiene, environmental discipline or equivalent.
  • Advanced Certifications Desired: Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), Associate Safety Professional (ASP),Certified Respirator Fit Tester, CPR, HAZWOPER, and DOT.
  • Preferred Training: NAVSEA 009-07 OSHA Training Institute (OTI) Occupational Safety and Health Standards for Maritime Industry, 3095; Electrical Standards, 3115; Fall Protection, 521; OSHA Guide to Industrial Hygiene. If NAVSEA approved equivalent, provide documentation demonstrating.

Work Environment:

  • Must be able to climb, bend, lift a maximum of 50 lbs., stand for extended periods of time, work in adverse weather conditions, and work in cramped enclosed spaces.
  • Also must be able to see clearly warning signs and lighting alerts as well as be able to hear audible alarms and communication to others to help with emergency responses.

Essential staff position Though infrequent, this position is determined to be essential to the operation of the company during times
of emergency or when the Government may be closed for various reasons. Hence, this position could be expected to remain on duty
or, if not on duty, to report for duty at any time when such emergencies or other closings occur.
