Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare all types of surfaces for
  • Select proper media to obtain desired surface preparation
  • Operate various style blasting
  • Proper use and selection of various types of hand and power tools for surface
  • Complete tasks with little or no
  • Follow and act on instructions/tasks
  • Work independently to accomplish
  • Work with others, as a team, to accomplish
  • Control costs in their assigned area of
  • Work in various environments, including but not limited to confined spaces, elevated staging, & manlifts.
  • Perform other duties as directed.

Necessary Skills and Experience:

  • Knowledge of the various SSPC surface preparation
  • Knowledge of OSHA Shipyard industry
  • Advanced knowledge of the selection and uses of various types and sizes of
  • Advanced knowledge of the set‐up, operation, & troubleshooting of the various preservation tools and
  • Advanced safety knowledge to include proper PPE selection, the safe handling, use, disposal, and storage of media, confined space entry, Lock‐out/Tag‐out procedures.
  • Advanced knowledge of NAVSEA preservation
  • Knowledge of various inspection/checkpoint
  • Knowledge of manufacturer’s product data sheets and
  • Knowledge of DEQ & EPA
  • Knowledge of work specifications.

Minimum Requirements:

  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in the marine preservation
  • Possess a valid C7
  • Reliable transportation and SDS.
  • Local travel as needed.

Required tools:

  • 10”‐12” adjustable wrenches
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Scraper
  • Channel locks
  • Flashlight
  • Utility knife
  • Wire cutters
  • Inspection mirror

Physical Demands:

  • While performing these job duties, employees are routinely required to stand, walk, crawl, sit, kneel, lift, and carry (up to 50 ). To use their arms, hands, and fingers to reach, feel, and type or write. To use their ears, nose, and mouth to talk, hear and smell. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:

This position is performed both in a shop and a traditional shipyard environment, with local travel between facilities and project locations as needed.

Primary work location is Portsmouth, VA.
